“We must not allow other people’s limited perceptions to define us.”
~ Virginia Satir
All too often, I see people living small because they allow the negative people that surround them to influence their way of living. Unfortunately, there are a lot of negative influences in our lives that we have to deal with on a daily basis. These influences can come in many forms such as a person (or group of people), the internet, a newspaper, television, etc. For now, I will focus solely on the negative influence of certain people. A negative person can be anyone in your life such as a family member, friend or colleague.
Who are you allowing to influence you? Are they positive or negative? Do they tell you that you will succeed or that you will fail? Do they urge you to live big or small? Sometimes it is difficult to evaluate the people closest to us but if you wish to become holistically successful, you must do so. How do I feel after talking to _________ (fill in the blank)? Do they motivate me or discourage me from creating the life of my dreams?
Answer these questions honestly and you will find that it is easy to determine which people you should be spending less or more time with. Now, I understand that it may not be that simple. Often, a negative influence may be a close family member or someone who you are forced to be around on a regular basis. In this case, I advise that you do not talk to them about your ambitions or other personal affairs. Instead, talk to them about general subjects such as the weather, global events, or other public affairs.
So why do some people not want others to live big? This is because they have chosen to live small or settle for a life of mediocrity. Therefore, whenever they are around people who are living big, they feel uncomfortable. As a result, they try to bring that individual down to their level of living. And they will try to do so in many ways. If they succeed, they will feel comfortable to be around you once again. If they fail to knock you down, they will usually avoid being around you altogether.
In closing, try testing the people in your life. Tell them that you want to do something extraordinary such as quit smoking/drinking, do the CN Tower stair climb challenge, write a book, start your own business, or whatever else your heart desires and see how they respond. If they are a positive influence, they will support you. Remember; surround yourself with the people that bring out the best in you.
